Published by ATD Fourth World for the 17th October Group and subtitled Voices from the 17th October UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, this book offers us the stories of people and communities in poverty, told in Ireland and overseas on the occasion of the 17th October UN Day. The words are powerful because the story-tellers lives are powerful: lives made up of countless acts of resistance and courage; lives filled with gestures of friendship and support, against all the odds.
The stories call for governments to rethink their priorities and to work in partnership with people in poverty, not for them. But first and foremost, these messages are a call to each and every one of us to invent new ways of living together, for this is what will give life and energy to programmes and policies and open the way to real change.
